Gilbert Gaul (1855-1919)

Spanish American War Battle Scene, 1899?, oil on canvas, 20 in x 26 in

Gaul chronicled Western Native American life drew hundreds of illustrations of Civil War battle scenes and camp life. The most famous collection of his works was printed in Battles and leaders of the Civil War (Century, 1887).

This interesting painting, an extremely rare historic subject showing soldiers firing at the enemy from a trench surrounded by several wounded or dead, may have been exhibited at the National Academy in 1900.
